eagle avenue building

I ran across this abandoned building on Eagle Avenue at Chapin on a recent walk. I like it. I wish I knew something about it. Anyone?    (click the photo for an expanded view)

jan 28 update

I’ve now walked Park Street and below on the main island. This quest to walk every street in Alameda in 2006 is starting to look quite doable. I’m starting to wonder about “Government Island” aka “Coast Guard Island” though. I’m not certain it’s technically part of Alameda. If it is, I may have trouble. I’m pretty sure the Coast Guard restricts access there.

fruitvale bridge

Three bridges, two tunnels and a couple of ferries link Alameda to the outside world. This is the Fruitvale Ave. bridge structure, from the vantage of Marina and Cambridge.

estuary smokestacks

Mixed-use residential and industrial scenes have always fit my eye. This photo is taken from Alameda’s Marina Blvd. In the background (actually, across the estuary in Oakland) is some factory thingy. Not sure what goes on there.

jan 19 update

Not too bad for 19 days. At this rate I shouldn’t have too much trouble completing my goal of walking the length of every Alameda street in 2006. Bay Farm Island and Alameda Point will probably take a long time, though.

see! i’m not all that strange

AP, via MSNBC, has a trend story on Nordic Walking, aka skiwalking.  So next time you see me gliding down an Alameda street with my red poles, think of me as cutting edge.

The poles used by ski walkers are similar to those found on ski slopes — they are made of aluminum, fiberglass, or ultralight carbon fiber. Skiwalking poles, however, typically have rubber tips so walkers can use them on hard surfaces such as streets or sidewalks. Some skiwalkig poles telescope so they can be easily taken on trips. The poles, which help walkers propel themselves forward, help develop arm and shoulder muscles and get the heart pumping.

clouds over alameda

One thing I miss about living in the upper midwest (South Dakota, Minnesota) is a good dramatic cloud formation. You just don’t get them as much in the Bay Area. But I captured a nice bunch of clouds on a rainy day in January. It even hailed a bit today.  (Photo taken from Gibbons Ave.)

My eldest daughter, accompanying me on a recent walk, snapped this photo of a cat on a Thompson Avenue doorstep. You can almost hear the purring…

jan 15 update

Here is my progress as of January 15, 2006. I had hoped to be done with every street below Broadway by this weekend, but I won’t quite make it. I still have most of “Tangletown” to do. /// Nothing terribly eventful has happened during my walks so far. I was stopped by a Alameda cop the other night as I walked on Monte Vista Ave, asking me if I’d seen some suspicious character lurking about. I sorta thought I might be the suspicious character he was checking out. Officer, there’s some strange dude walking in the middle of our street with ski poles….
