my 2006 resolution

While taking a stroll in the East End on Jan 1, 2006, I had an idea: I’m going to walk the length of every street in Alameda this year. Why? To get in shape, and to really see all of Alameda in a way you can’t do in a car.Along the way, I will post photos and thoughts about the Alameda pedestrian experience.

I’m starting in the East End, but will pick off a few streets here and there around town while waiting for my children to take piano lessons, get their teeth straightened, etc.

So, if you see a guy walking about Alameda with two red poles, it’s probably me. The hiking poles make me go a little faster, and work my upper body a bit. I guess it’s called Nordic Walking, but whatever. Please refrain from remarks about how I’m expecting snow.

    Hi Jon,

I enjoyed reading about you in the paper yesterday. I have done something similar but riding my bike. I did not keep track of it as well as you, but I estimate that I have been on at least 95% plus of the streets & paths in the city. This includes the base & bay farm. I went around the whole perimeter of the base to the part which is in the city & county of San Francisco. I tell people that I rode my bike to San Francisco. Before moving to Alameda I lived in Berkeley & have ridden most of the streets in Berkeley too & a good part of Oakland. I have also rode my bike or walked close to every trail in the east by hills, including: Wildcat Canyon, Tilden, Sibley, Huckleberry, Redwood, Chabot & Briones Parks. I have always loved walking & bike riding because you can see so much more at the slower pace. Maybe I can join you some time & we can talk.

    Best of luck, Ken
